Business Name: JugoPlus Architects
Business Owner: Patrick Jugo
Number of Employees: 1 – Singularity has its benefits, but by no means poses limitations. In this age of digital connectivity, professional collaboration allows projects of all sizes to be accomplished, while maintaining the efficiency and simplicity of a sole proprietorship.
Years in Business: 9 years as JugoPlus Architects - 21 years in the profession
Years in Maplewood: All 9 as a business . . . 18 as a resident
Describe in one or two sentences the nature of your business? JugoPlus Architects is a full-service, commercial architecture, interior design and planning firm that also offers general contracting services on projects it designs. Unlike the traditional Design-Build process, which is typically contractor-led, JugoPlus offers a cost-conscious, design-focused delivery that facilitates a seamless transition from design and documentation through to the built environment. Just ask one our clients that have benefited from this delivery model.
What is the biggest thing happening for your business right now? The expansion of Penzeys Spices on Manchester into the adjacent building, 7342 Manchester. The scope necessitated the design and construction of a complete shell and interior renovation of the century-old 7342 building for Owner Rob Birenbaum, while giving the existing 7338 Manchester Penzeys store a complete interior face-lift, insuring business could continue as usual throughout the entire process. They move a lot of spice out of that store every day and could not afford a retail interruption!
Is there any particular business or professional accomplishment that you are most proud of? Profitably enduring the past 5 years of the design and construction market ‘bottom’.
If you’re curious to see how JugoPlus can assist on your next project, just call or stop over.

I repeatedly hear that having a Facebook presence is essential to your business. But is it really? Since Facebook’s IPO they have been under pressure by investors to generate increased revenues. This is progressively trickling down to business owners who are (probably) increasingly going to be charged by Facebook to promote their business. Here’s an article to consider.
Join the discussion: Does Facebook help your bottom line? As a small business person would you invest your time and money into Facebook if they continue to charge more fees to make your company visible to your followers? As a consumer do you think that following a company on Facebook affects your buying habits?
Add comments below and lets try to figure out if Facebook is really worth your time or email me at nbettger@maplewood-chamber.com and I’ll add your comment to the webpage.
Each November, we find ourselves reflecting on what we’re Thankful for in preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday! If you’re looking for some inspiration, check out how some of our friends and neighbors responded when we asked what they were thankful for.
Lindi McDonald, Studio Forte-I would say I am grateful for: Kakao Chocolate, Pie Oh My and my running shoes to burn off all the extra calories
Mayor James White-I am most thankful for my family, my God and my Country.
Woody Johnson, Citizens National Bank-“This Thanksgiving, I am most thankful for good weather for the Taste, big money raffles and Jeanine Beck, not necessarily in that order”.
Keith Dodel, Gene-Del Printing-”Most thankful for my wife Patti and my 2 boys Brian & Kyle and Skyler the wonderdog. I’m thankful for our loyal clients and their referrals that keep our employees busy. I thank God for the health and welfare for all our friends and of course a cold beer and Harley Davidson.”
Carol Mertz, Rampant Interactive-”What I am most thankful for this Thanksgiving is the ability to wake up each day to do something that I love with people who inspire me. I am so lucky to have such supportive friends, family, clients, and colleagues who support me, educate me, and strengthen me on a daily basis.”
Adrian Glass, The Post Sports Bar and Grill-”What I am most thankful for this Thanksgiving is yet another year of good times and smiles along with the continued health and prosperity of my family, friends, staff members, and business.”
Betty Berger, Giant Steps ”What I am most thankful for this Thanksgiving is being surrounded by a supportive community that cares about all people of all abilities.”
Steve Moseley, Maplewood Baptist Church “The gift of life. I am thankful that God has blessed me with a wonderful family. My wife and two children are the greatest blessing. Thank you Lisa, Brandon and Brittany!”
Sandy Kapsar, Sandra B. Kapsar, CPA, “My family and friends”
Doug Houser, Historian for Maplewood, “What I am most thankful for this Thanksgiving is my whole family which includes my 34 year relationship with my wife, my Grandson Tony’s imminent return from Afghanistan and my Mother’s upcoming 91st birthday.”
S. Carmody Photography: Will be hosting a closing reception on November 3rd for the “Our Souls Narrative” exhibit. Exquisite, haunting, and personal portraiture, which encapsulates the essence of a complete story caught in one fleeting moment in time, is the hallmark of the work of Aunia Kahn. Often referred to as the artist’s personal interpretation of the world around her depicted in movie-like stills, these images will move the viewer visually with narratives all its own. This exhibition will feature works from her most recent series, and a collection of exclusive black and white images, which depict hardship, triumph, and the power of the human spirit. http://www.facebook.com/events/367425606679272/

The 2012 Business Person of the Year Award was presented to Rachelle L’Ecuyer.
One might ask, “How can a municipal employee be the Maplewood Businessperson of the Year?” In the case of Rachelle L’Ecuyer, the City’s Director of Community Development for the past 7 years, there’s an easy answer: No one has done more for Maplewood businesses and to grow our business community.
The special events that Rachelle spearheads bring scores of people to our city that spend money on those days and then return to visit our stores and restaurants. Let Them Eat Art, Women Making History, the Arts Walks and the Coffee Crawl have become iconic, signature events that are associated with Maplewood and enhance its image.
Rachelle has also developed strong relationships with media personnel of all stripes, which has led to a consistent diet of positive coverage for Maplewood and many of its businesses. And her constant promotion of all things Maplewood via Facebook, Twitter and e-mail stands out in the increasingly-crowded world of social networking. And if there were an award for the one person who patronizes Maplewood businesses more than anyone else, Rachelle would win that, too. Any time she needs a gift for a friend or relative, the first thing she thinks is “What can I buy in Maplewood?” And no one eats at our restaurants more than Rachelle!
Rachelle’s efforts have also been recognized by the community at large, resulting in the cover story in the March 2009 issue of St. Louis Woman magazine and being named in 2012 to the prestigious board of directors of the St. Louis County Economic Council’s Business Finance Corporation, a group made up of top business leaders in the area.
The 2012 Citizen of the Year Award was awarded to Bob Harsh.
Bob Harsh hails from Iowa. After graduating from Moravia High School, he joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation where he worked until his retirement working with in Critical Response and Inspection Teams.
He has been active in the American Youth Hostel working with the Moonlight Ramble. In 2006 Bob was the recipient of the GEICO Public Service Award for his 22 years of work with the Special Olympics in St. Louis. He has been a volunteer usher at the Fox Theater for over 20 years.
Closer to home, in Maplewood Bob is an active member and leader of the Maplewood United Methodist Church, serving in various roles and offices over the years, currently singing in choir and serving as the Volunteer Coordinator of the church’s community Second Hand Shop. He has played a key role in Maple Days, coordinating the event for 20 years and serving as Treasurer. He is a former member and past-president of Maplewood Richmond Heights Board of Education. He currently serves on the MRH Senior Advisory council and Maplewood Park Board. He is also a longtime member of the Maplewood Chamber of Commerce.
In his “spare” time Bob is a Cardinals Fan, Blue Devils Fan and chicken farmer. He never misses an MCBF Concert or other Maplewood event. He enjoys vacationing with his family and especially spending time with his children, Renee and Courtney and grandchildren Erin, Andrew, Caroline and Henry.
This November, our Bob and his wife, Janet will celebrate 50 years of being in Maplewood, and 50 years of marriage.
The 2012 Educator of the Year Award is Heather Bailey.
Heather has been an educator at the Early Childhood Center in the MRH school district for thirteen years. She is a teacher who demonstrates great passion in her work, consistently goes above and beyond, is a model of teaching excellence, and embraces the importance of continuing to stay current in her practice through professional development.
Heather is tireless in her efforts to improve the lives of the children she teaches. Mrs. Bailey believes with every fiber of her being that children are powerful, deep thinkers and given the right encouragement, can grapple with big ideas. She reflects on her practice and modifies her instruction to provide the best learning environment possible for students. Parents consistently report that they know their children better because of Heather’s work with them. She is intentional and purposeful in her goal setting with children, scaffolding and supporting them along the way to high achievement.
A shining example of Mrs. Bailey’s commitment to the children and families of MRH is Mosaic Services that she and her husband founded. This foundation embraces children in need at ECC by partnering with families to meet the academic, and social-emotional and basic needs of children so they can reach their fullest potential. Mosaic Services continues to grow each year and provides afterschool enrichment programs for more than 20 students each semester, summer camp scholarships, tuition for dance classes, fees for MRH Youth Sports and more.
It is truly difficult to find words that adequately describe my respect for Mrs. Bailey’s contributions to our learning community. She approaches issues or concerns through an unquestionable ethic of respect for others. It is rare to come across an educator who is a true advocate for the rights of children and their families.
