V Three Studios, LLC

Business Name: V Three Studios LLC- Architecture + Interactive

How did you choose Maplewood as a location for your business? We were looking for a bigger office in several areas around St Louis and Maplewood was at the top of our list due to the neighborhood feel and creative culture.  The two things that sealed the deal for us was our friends Chris and Greg (Wellbody on Sutton) leading us to a vacancy on Sutton and the welcoming embrace we received from Rachelle from the City of Maplewood.

You specialize in re-imaging communication spaces and have worked on a variety of projects from radio studios to the Danforth Gallery at the St. Louis Art Museum. What project are you the most proud of and why? It’s impossible to pick one.  That’s like asking which of my children I am most proud of.  We are most proud of the projects that the client in the end says this space is everything we wanted and even more than we imagined.  WCBS in SoHo NY was special to us for it’s heritage as the first all news station in the US started by Edward R Morrow in the WWII era. The Harvey Digital Media Center at Washington University’s Danforth University Center is awesome in that we got an opportunity to bring all the experience we have gained around the country working for the top Media & Communication companies back to our hometown and a cutting edge institution.

In addition to architecture V Three does interactive projects including websites and digital media. What are some projects that you have worked on? We have built sites for client such as the Austin brewery Thirsty Planet and apps for clients such as the AIA St Louis Chapter.  We are currently developing an app for them that will highlight the historic significance of many buildings downtown.

According to the Small Business Monthly article you started out  in 2010 with no startup money and one project from a personal relationship and now you have a six person team and have worked on some really cool projects. What has been your biggest challenge in growing your business and what have you done to overcome it?

We boot strapped it for the first two years and looking back I am not sure how we did it.  We often felt like a cat that had used 6 of its 9 lives.  We now have a line of credit in place to fuel our growth.  We have been very fortunate in this Design & Construction climate to have grown every year we have been in business.

What is your favorite Maplewood destination outside of work? We often hang at The Post or Schlafly for our meetings.  My family loves the fish taco’s at Maya Cafe.  Home Wine Kitchen rocks as well.  For me personally as a guitar player the most dangerous place in Maplewood is Eddie’s guitars.  Nate and his guys are top notch and have the best inventory in town.

Earth First Solar

Company name: Earth First Solar

What aspects of the solar industry are you involved in? We do everything from commercial and residential solar electric panels to the solar flood lights, attic fans, garden lights and solar tubes.

How long have you been in the industry? 3 years.

Why should I invest in solar? Reason number one is you are getting renewable energy. Reason number two is that there is a 2-3 ROI on commercial and 4-5 ROI on residential without counting added equity. Reason number three is that it will never get more affordable than it is now.

Reduce your Ameren bills and save the planet with a renewable source of energy.

How much does it cost to install solar panels? Average is around $3.75 per watt. Let Ameren pay for half of the system and the federal tax incentive pay for another third so that you have your own power station on top or you business or residence.

How long do the solar panels last? Over 100 years.

What kind of upkeep is needed after the solar panels are installed?None, unless you want to clean them.

Do you do anything besides rooftop solar panels? We can do solar light posts, solar attic fans, and more.

Solar attic fans reduce your electricity bill by drawing heat out of the attic using the solar powered fan. No other electricity source is required.

This Sunforce Solar Lamp Post leaves you with no need to run electricity to put out a front yard lamp. It uses LED bulbs that you won’t need to replace often. Just change a battery every three years or so.

What is the best way to contact you if I’m interested in exploring solar for my home or business? Call me directly at (314)920-5412 or email me at kyle.barber@earthfirstsolar.com

Stellar Batik

Business: Stellar Batik
What is Batik? Batik is an ancient art form that uses a wax-resistant dyeing technique to create one-of-a-kind designs on cloth. Stellar Batik’s process begins with high quality, 100% cotton fabric. Every image is drawn freehand by Stellar Batik with melted wax on a piece of fabric. After the wax hardens, each item is hand painted and then waxed over to seal in the colors. In the dyeing process, the color is unable to fully penetrate the design. However, as the wax bends, it begins to crack, which allows some of the dye to organically seep through. After dyeing, the fabric is boiled in soap and water to remove the wax. This process shrinks the fabric which further sets in the dye. Through our process of batik, an ordinary piece of fabric is transformed into a unique and colorful garment.
How did you get into Batik? I was first exposed to batik by working for a Batik company as their primary garment painter. After I left I thought about the art form for years.  I eventually self educated myself on the whole process; a lot of trial and error.

Your website says that you are “eco-loyal” what does that mean for your business? Stellar Batik does its best to be as low impact as possible to the Earth.  For instance we use the labor intensive process of putting each garment in boiling water to remove the wax unlike other Batik companies who use dry cleaners.

How long does the Batik process take? The whole Batik process can take around 3 days from start to finish.  It is a 7 step process that I usually do in big batches.

Tell me about the Batik parties. During parties guests are able to come in and use our comfortable studio for two hours.  We are able to inform and highlight the beautiful Batik process. The guests chooses a design ahead of time.  They then have the opportunity to personalize their own garment by painting with our bright colorful dyes.  The style and creativity of each individual comes out in each piece.  Parties are a lot of fun and a great bonding experience.

Are there any Maplewood businesses that you’ve done work for? We have been honored to do work for great Mapelwood businesses such as Schlafly Bottleworks,  Foundation Grounds Coffee House, Stone Spiral Coffee House

HR etc!!

HR etc!! began out of Mary Kausch’s truck 21 years ago … literally! It started as an answer to her frustration of being in the wrong job within Corporate America.

She had an unyielding yearning to learn more about her innate strengths and how to use these strengths consistently to earn her living. She was determined to know more of her own human nature and to help others overcome similar frustration.

Now with a team of six, Mary, Chief Insight Officer of HR etc!!, Turns Workforces into Forces of Nature. Mary knows people- specifically employees and employers – through studies of and experiences with human nature. She knows what employees need to be their most productive and to thrive. The key to Mary’s powerful insight is her ability to recognize that every employee is, first and foremost, a person – a multidimensional human being.

Using her proprietary tool called the Employment Partnership, Mary ensures that your company receives a return on its investment for compensating employees, and the employees consistently share their intelligence, skills, knowledge, abilities, attitudes and aptitudes in exchange for the compensation.

“Think of me as your human resources department,” Mary said. “I can help you with everything from building strategic teams, to facilitating staff retreats. But mostly, I make sure your work force fits your mission, vision and values. I know how to attract, recruit, select and hire the best employees for your company. Then I help retain them, develop them and transition them to the positions that fit them and your company the best. When everyone is thriving, everyone is more productive.”

Mary saves you time, money and energy with her three-step process of Dig In, Cultivate and Grow:
She’ll dig in by using assessments, focus groups and surveys to discover valuable information and insights that provide guidance for creating and/or changing what is required for maximizing employee productivity.
She’ll help you cultivate by getting to know you, your company and your team members through structured and intentional interaction. She helps you gain clarity and confidence, so you align natural strengths and inclinations with what needs to be accomplished.
You grow through Mary’s expertise in cultivating the synergy required for employees to become naturally aligned with what they need for being their most productive.

“I’m an educator at heart,” said Mary. “Whether I’ve got your employees seated in a conference room or hanging from a zip line, my focus is to find their inner strengths so they can fulfill both your needs and their own. Because when employees are thriving, so are you and your company.”

Experiences inside boardrooms and in the great outdoors have created for Mary a unique confluence of knowledge, wisdom and insight that she brings to not-for-profits, companies and associations of all sizes. She facilitates, consults and speaks across the United States and Canada.

Mary earned her degree in Human Resources and Communications from Southwest Missouri State University. She has gained nearly 30 years of experience in the realm of human resources and organization development from her work as a self-employed, independent consultative facilitator and speaker, as well as from former positions within Health Systems Management, Citicorp, Whirlpool and the Tecumseh Leadership Center.

Mary and her company, HRetc!!, have resided in Maplewood for the past 14 years, where Mary has been actively involved with the Chamber for the past seven.

Check out Mary’s capabilities at www.hretc.com, call her at 314-409-6622, and follow her on Twitter @marykausch.
